How do you pack for a Girlyman tour?
Jack Kerouac had a dream of a certain kind of road trip, and all he needed to bring it to life was three weeks and a roll of teletype paper. And those kids in the Grapes of Wrath lit out for California with not much more than their dust.
In the spirit of those who hit the road and kept it light, here’s what I packed: 4 shirts, a camera, a notebook, and 65 pens. And sneakers, for keeping up with the band.
Thursday afternoon, I’ll meet up in Ohio with Ty, Nate, Doris, and JJ — some of the most experienced travelers I know. If there’s anything I’ve forgotten, they’ll have it. I hear Ty, for example, travels with her own decaf coffee bar. Nice!
In fact, I’ll bet that van is packed with makeshift creature comforts. I’ll investigate, and report back.

how many sets of strings/drumsticks/rods/heads do you head out with, how often do you change said strings/sticks/heads, and what are the preferred brands?
Wow, that IS an impressive amount of pens. Why not 64 or 66? Is there significance to the number 65? And Field Notes! Love those damn notebooks. I can tell, this is going to be a very fun, well-documented journey. Can’t wait to hear more about your adventures!
